Saludos Cordiales

British missionary Paul McAuley has filed an appeal in the court of Maynas this week against the government’s decision to deport him from the country. This step effectively suspends his deportation, and he has 15 days to prepare his rebuttal of the charges made by the Ministry of the Interior, of violating regulations governing foreign residents by instigating social unrest.

McAuley’s legal defense is provided by attorney Rita Ruck, in Iquitos, and the lawyers of the three vicariates in the Maynas province. He has received the full support of leading institutions, including the Legal Defense Institute, IDL, the Peruvian Environmental Law Society, SPDA, the Instituto Bartolomé de las Casas, the National Evangelical Council, and the Human Rights Association, Aprodeh.

QUEEN'S COUNSEL WRITES TO PERUVIAN AMBASSADOR

Please pass this to the Ambassador, His Excellency Ricardo Luna:

May I ask you to pass this message to your Government and to its President.

Dear Ambassador,

May I ask you to pass this message to your Government and to its President.

It is a most regrettable and tragic step that your Government is taking by expelling Brother Paul from Peru. He has a large international reputation for doing good in your country. His expulsion will send an extremely unfortunate message to the world outside Peru - to the effect that the Government of Peru has fallen under the influence of the worst kind of foreign corporate interests who are only concerned with their US-dollar profits and not at all with the real interests of the people of Peru and with protecting the rain forest and its inhabitants.

Brother Paul is widely regarded as a genuine friend of Peru and its people and as person who has worked tirelessly for them and against the bad influences of these large foreign corporations.

I have personally met some of the young people whom  Brother Paul has helped and I have been very, very impressed by his work in resisting the unlawful destruction of the rain forest, only by using the power of the press and legal means.

He ought to be held up by the Government as a champion of Peru – and helped in his work - and not as someone whom the Government hopes to silence by expelling him.

May I suggest that your President personally takes the time and trouble to inform himself and to meet with Brother Paul. He will then realise that this is not a man whom Peru should be expelling, but rather that he a person of God who genuinely wishes to help – and really can help - Peru and its people.

Yours sincerely,

Stephen Nathan

Queen’s Counsel
